Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
What is it?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a light, skin-stretching massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system, reducing swelling (edema) by encouraging the flow of lymph fluid, which leads to faster and more comfortable healing. It should not be confused with traditional massage.
Post-surgery swelling is common, which is why plastic surgeons who prioritize patient recovery recommend several strategies to reduce discomfort and inflammation. One of the primary and most effective methods for promoting a faster and smoother recovery is lymphatic drainage massage.
How does it Work?
The therapist uses specific strokes and techniques to further assist excess fluid and waste products from tissues to be filtered by healthy lymphatic vessels and nodes. The fluid passes through the lymphatic system and then is excreted by urine. Thus, speeding up recovery, minimizing scarring and improving skin elasticity and circulation.
For optimal results, it’s important that MLD is performed by a trained and certified lymphatic therapist, typically starting a few days to a week after surgery.
What are the Benefits?
Accelerates Recovery
Reduces Post-Operative Pain by alleviating swelling and fluid retention
Prevents Complications such as seromas and infections
Promotes relaxation and overall wellbeing
How can this help for my Post-Op results?
Reduces swelling by improving lymphatic circulation and flushing out excess fluids.
Prevents fibrosis (scar tissue buildup) that can cause lumpiness or uneven healing.
Enhances skin contours for a smoother, more sculpted post-surgical appearance.
Speeds up recovery so final results become visible sooner.
Improves skin texture and tone by reducing puffiness and promoting even healing.
